There are several options to help you zoom to the area of interest. Use the pan/zoom buttons on the upper left of the map. Use + to zoom-in and - to zoom-out. Use arrows to move the direction. "Double click" your left mouse button on the map to zoom-in. Hold down your left mouse button and drag the mouse to pan Enter a city or highway name in the upper right Go to Location box Select from a pull-down list of areas and highways by hovering your mouse over the down arrow near the Go to Location box

Q. Can I search by a milepost range on a highway?

No. The search capabilities are limited by roads or areas. See above.

Q. I can't see the maps, how can I view the road conditions?

Select the Text View link below the map legend. You can view road conditions by Region. The Scrolling Notices table includes all urgent events that are posted in scrolling red text above the maps.

Q. How does the 511 system get its information?

The winter driving condition reports and incidents due to natural disasters are entered by ADOT&PF maintenance personnel statewide. Construction reports come from both ADOT&PF construction personnel and local agencies such as the Municipality of Anchorage. Major accidents are generally entered by our partners, Alaska State Troopers. If they are unable to enter an event, ADOT&PF will provide the information as soon as possible. The road weather cameras and data come from our network of road weather towers. For more information, see http://roadweather.alaska.gov. The 511 website also receives weather alerts directly from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Q. Why isn't there information for my area?

DOT&PF reports daily winter driving conditions on major highways only. Construction events are entered on major highways and other State routes. The Municipality of Anchorage provides construction events on local roads around the Anchorage area. Otherwise, local reports are not available due to limited or no information available from local government agencies that maintain those roads.

Q. What do the green shaded areas represent?

The green shaded areas are National and State Parks, or wilderness areas.

Q. How do I find out the location of mileposts?

Most reports are posted with a route (ex. Richardson Highway) and a milepost to pinpoint the location. The 511.alaska.gov provides a milepost map to give travelers an idea of where mileposts are located. To access the milepost map select the Alaska Mileposts tab below the map legend.

Q. How can I get a report for a specific route?

The website provides a "route report" page that allows users to select an origin and destination. Select the "Route Report" link below the map legend. Routes are pre-selected and correspond with the State's route numbers.

Q. How do I view the driving conditions?

Turn on the Driving Conditions in the Map Legend. Zoom to area of interest. Using your left mouse button, click on the dot that sits on top of the green, yellow or red segments. A pop-up window will appear with the driving condition information.

Q. Will the 511 system provide trip times?

At this time, the 511 system does not provide trip times.

Q. I'm driving up to Alaska in the summer months (May-Sept). Can 511 help me estimate what the road conditions are like at that time of year?

The 511 website does display future road construction activities that are entered into the system. The intent of this is to support planning for future trips. However, while the construction crews make every possible attempt to keep the information updated, there is no guarantee that all future road construction will be entered into the system, especially as plans for construction change. DOT&PF recommends that you always check the National Weather Service (NWS) reports before you travel. NWS information is available both on the website and telephone.

Q. Will the 511 system provide trip times?

At this time, the 511 system does not provide trip times.

Q. I'm driving up to Alaska in the winter months (Oct-Apr). Can 511 help me estimate what the road conditions are like at that time of year?

The 511 website posts daily winter driving condition reports on Alaska's major highways. Occasionally reports are not provided on the weekends or after normal business hours due to limited staff working during those times. DOT&PF highly recommends that you check the National Weather Service reports before you travel. NWS information is available both on the website and telephone.

Please read our Winter Driving Tips for more information.
Select Winter Driving Tips tab below the Map Legend.

Q. How often are the weather cameras updated?

There is no set time when all camera images are updated. Rather, cameras are updated at different times and frequencies. The timestamp of when each camera was last updated is included with the display.

Q. What if a camera comes up with no picture?

This could be the result of the camera not functioning properly, the communications with the camera being disconnected, or the fact that the last image captured was at night when it was dark.

Q. Can I print from the website?

The website allows printer friendly versions of route reports. Select the Route Reports tab below the map legend. In route reports you can select an origin & destination on the map. This produces a list of events along that route. Use the printer icon to print out the report.

Q. Does the ADOT&PF publish the real-time event information (incidents, driving conditions, planned events) to a public location that would allow us to write software to       download the data automatically?

Yes, ADOT&PF publishes the active events to a public accessible location, and any public agency, private company, or individual is welcome to download the data. A National Standard is used to format the data. There are actually three (3) XML sites (one for incidents, one for planned events, and one for driving conditions). The intent is that these three feeds will allow other systems to access and download the information of interest to them, and share the data with travelers. The URL for the XML feeds are as follows: For Road Conditions: https://511ride.alaska.gov:8443/rss?type=roadconditions For Incidents: https://511ride.alaska.gov:8443/rss?type=incidents For Planned Events (e.g. Roadwork or planned closures): https://511ride.alaska.gov:8443/rss?type=plannedevents
