Hints for Using 511
HELP WITH 5-1-1
In addition to visiting this Web Site, you can dial 5-1-1 from your phone for statewide traveler information.
How to use 5-1-1:
When you dial 5-1-1 you will hear:
- Welcome to 511 Travel in the Know. To request information on a specific
highway, Press 1 or say Highway." To request a local summary, Press 2 or
say "Local". For the menu options Press 0 or say "Menu".
If you Press 1 or say, "Highway" you will be prompted
to enter the first three letters of a highway name or say the name of a highway
(ex. Richardson Highway). You will then hear the driving conditions, road work and
other relevant information along the highway you chose.
If you Press 2 or say, "Local Summary" you will be
prompted to say the name of a city or town. (ex. Fairbanks) You will then hear the
regional traffic summary around that city or town. You will then be prompted to say
the name of a route with the traffic reports in that area.
If you Press 0 or say, "Menu" you will have the
following categories to choose from:

Highway Reports Press 1 or say "Highway Reports" -
reports on driving conditions, road work and other relevant travel
information along a highway. |

Local Summary Press 2 or say "Local Summary" -
reports on adverse driving conditions and routine reports around a
city/town. |

Weather Forecast Press 3 or say "Weather Forecast" -
gives National Weather Service report around a city/town. |

Ferries Press 4 or say "Ferries" - gives ferry information. |

Comment on 511 Press 5 or say "Comments on 511" -
gives caller the option to leave comments |

Yukon Road Report Press 6 or say “Yukon Road Report” – asks to
transfer the caller to Yukon Road Reports. |
Suggestions: You can use the following
features to help expedite your call.
- Repeat: To repeat the menu just say, "Repeat"
- Stop: To stop the information anytime during the call, say "Stop". The call will be routed to the main menu.
- Help: Press the star key (*) or Say "Help" anytime during your call.
- Menu: Press 0 or Say "Menu" anytime to hear the Menu options.
Speak Clearly and Avoid Background Noise:
511 allows you to speak or use key pad entry to make requests. This system does
have problems when it hears back ground noise, like a radio in the background or
others speaking near the microphone, etc. Please try to speak clearly and follow
the instructional prompts. If the system does not understand you, you will have
the option to enter the information by keypad. (ex. Press the first 3 letters in
the name of the city you want and then press #)
